PM Masters: Frida Ramstedt

It's no secret that I have a thing for Scandinavian design and that's why I started reading Trendenser when I discovered the world of blogging. This amazing blog is the creation of Swedish blogger Frida Ramstedt, one of the most accomplished ones you'll ever meet. Before I leave you to meet Frida, I want to promote her iPad magazine which was my sweet companion on my flight back from NY... You're going to love it! {all images taken by Frida and found on Trendenser}

How did you get started in your career?

In 2005 when I was studying business and administration at the university, I decided that I wanted to write my thesis on Ikea. The blog phenomenon had just started, and I thought that it might be something to add to my CV as a concrete proof of my passion for interior decorating and design. But Trendenser became much more than that as I started to pick up readers and realized that many followers read it as a complement to interior design magazines. Since blogs in general are much faster than the magazines at publishing news and trends within the industry it became a virtuous circle and with the growth in number of readers, my interest in taking photos increased, which in turn made the blog more popular.

A few years later, when I was working in the advertising industry, it became difficult to work with promoting companies during daytime and then go home to blog and write about them in a more objective and non-commercial way. One day it felt like I had come to the roads end and had to make a decision, whether I wanted to make my living through blogging or by making commercials and ads. It might sound like an easy choice for any passionate blogger to make but for me it was a very difficult decision to leave the safe and well paid job I had, with wonderful colleagues - to start working completely on my own, in a new business that no one knew anything about. However today, looking back at the options I had and the life it lead to, I’m very happy I dared to challenge my fears.

What are your sources of inspiration?

Internet, Pinterest, traveling, the fashion industry... You can get influences from so many sources and contexts today. Not only from the interior design business.

Where do you work and how do you get organized around it?

At first I tried to work from my apartment. I didn’t want to put to many expenses on my shoulders until my company was up and running. But it didn’t work out at all. I just spend my days washing, cleaning, color coordinating the books in our book shelves... you know. Doing all kinds of tasks that were much easier than the ones I really should or had to do. Like sending quotes, calling customers or asking for freelance work.

At first it also felt like such a luxury to be able to stay at home when my husband went to work. For me who had worked very hard for many years in the advertising industry the freedom of being my own boss felt like I had won a million dollars on the lottery. But only for the first week or to. Then I started to climb the walls and I showered my husband with questions and wanted to chit chat as soon as he came home again. It was no good for our relationship, nor for me or for my company. I realized that I had to take my new occupation as seriously as I had if it had been a new job with a new boss - at least if I wanted to be taken seriously as an entrepreneur and wanted to get things done - so I forced myself to routines. Today I try to work as much as I possibly can in my own little office, in an old building from 1842. In the very center of Gothenburg. And I love it! {Cover of Frida's cookbook below}

Which are your favorite Scandinavian brands? What other brands you would like to work with?

I love Fritz Hansen for their timeless classics, but I also admire companies like HAY who have managed to challenge the way we look at Scandinavian design. HAY has done a lot to make good design available to the many people without compromising with quality and function. I really appreciate their product design and concept. {Frida has collaborated with many brands including IKEA, check it out!}

What other profession you would like to have besides yours? Any business advice?

As I’m educated to work with marketing that is my first field of choice if I ever have to make the decision again, but I’m also curious about the photography business. Working as a photographer or writer (author) would be another creative option if everything fails. Some day.

What are you listening to these days?

Oh. I always have Spotify up and running on my computer. I listen to all kinds of music but I instantly feel calm and happy whenever David Gray is singing in the background when I work.

When you travel what are the essential items you take with you?

I always travel with my Rimova. It’s the best bag ever and always keeps whatever I bring with me safe and sound. Especially my camera equipment and my computer. The rest can be bought whenever I arrive.

Where is your favorite vacation spot?

I love Skåne, in the south of Sweden. The area of Österlen is so relaxing and has such a nice atmosphere. Go there, if you haven’t been there before!

What is the best design advice you can give someone?

Don’t buy things you don’t need, for money you don’t have, to impress people you don’t like (and who rarely ever care anyway). Follow your gut feeling and surround yourself with beautiful objects you like. The will match. Eventually. If I have to give one advice... stick to a black and white base and just add 1 or maximum 2 colors. It will work for the rest of your life. You’ll never get bored of it. And most items are made in black and white as options so it won’t be hard to find (or sell) the things you like (or don’t like in a few years’ time) either.

Dear Frida, thank you for being part of this series... I really appreciate it. To all my readers, I want to invite you to welcome this very talented blogger into your daily readings... I guarantee you won't be disappointed!

Have a great Thursday!

PM Masters: Christina Weber

I came across Christina's amazing store Studiopatro, through a website and fell immediately in love with her designs and very useful products. On top of that all her products are hand made, sustainable and one of the best gifts you can give a good friend.

How did you get started in your career?

I was teaching art right out of college, and I loved it, but I wanted so badly to be a graphic designer. So I taught myself, learned by doing, and after a few years started my design firm. 32 years and many reiterations later, here I am... putting ink on cloth!

What are your sources of inspiration?
Nature (I love leaves!), architectural forms, fashion, patterns of light, color.
A trip to an art museum.
A stack of design and architecture magazines.
A Saturday walk through the Mission neighborhood.
Flora Grubb Nursery.

Where do you work and how do you get organized around it?
I crave lots of natural light and being surrounded by my work and what inspires me. So the walls of my studio are covered with colors and patterns and words and photography. Even marketing and business strategies become visuals on the walls. Visuals and thinking go hand-in-hand.

Which is your favorite client of project?
Always what I'm working on right now.

What other profession would you like to have besides yours?
Artist. Painter. Or filmmaker.

What are you listening to these days?
Can't get enough of Gotye. Also, Kate Bush, Emiliana Torrini, Rosanne Cash, Dusty Springfield, Sam Cooke, for starters.

When you travel what are the essential items you take with you?
Scarves that double as "blankies". A good book, and a sketchbook.

Where is your favorite vacation spot?
hmmmmm, what's a vacation??
Really though, I'm always looking forward to going somewhere new and different. To cities that are full of wonderful design and good food.

What is the best business advice you can give someone?
Be generous, and make customer service your priority.

What does the future hold for your business? Any plans?
Newness always! New designs, new products, new ideas. Collaborations too, hopefully.

Thanks you Christina for sharing with all of us your talent, for opening the doors to your studio and for showing us your beautiful products!

PM Masters: Liv Lundelius

Sometimes you come across incredibly talented people and wish you lived in the same city so you could be friends and do cool things together. One of those people is Liv Lundelius a make-up artist and fashion designer based out of London {one more reason to go there!}.

How did you get started in your career?
I have always been following my inner guidance and have done what I truly love to do. If you know what you want to do, opportunities will show up and you can take your chances.

What are your sources of inspiration?
Mainly life! Real women and the stories behind people. For a certain photo shoot, it can be anything from a structure or colour in nature or food or a more abstract source like a movie character or a mood.

How did you transition from fashion designer to make-up artist? Where do you see the connection between all the creative work you do?

I believe fashion design and make up artistry have a lot in common.
You have to have an eye for the work and combination of colours, proportions, shapes and textures. My tutor in fashion school ones said, that her aim is to teach us the best design skills possible and make us creative thinkers, so that we go out of fashion school one day able to design a good product no matter if it's a car, phone or dress. And it became true for me, as I am now designing Make Up looks.

If you are an artist or designer by heart you will continuously come up with new ideas and inspiration will always lead you to new trends and even new professions. It's important to keep flexible and see what life brings to you.

In my case, when I moved to London a few years ago I kept designing the make-up looks for my own fashion label and discovered it to be a bigger passion than I ever knew.

While trying to figure out how to get my way into this field professionally, I came across an incredible chance of finding out about a make-up talent competition, which won me a scholarship to a fantastic full time make up course, including a full kit. Bang! Life sometimes just happens and with so much encouragement from above I feel extremely grateful and am ever since taking every challenge to expand my portfolio and working with inspiring people.

What other profession you would like to have besides yours?
I am already doing most of the things I love. I would also like to be a photographer, art director, writer, healer, nutritionist, and at one point when I am 75 or so I would like to be a Yoga teacher too. As well as Grandma but I guess before all that I would need to start becoming a mum first.

What are you listening to these days?
#1 The rain outside, it's been a wet Spring so far.
#2 Our neighbor is a DJ, the walls are thin... so we are listen to his mixes quite a lot.
#3 We are also constantly singing 80's disco classics here at home, David is fantastic in beat boxing and we do silly dances too.
#4 My latest favorite band is Bombay Bicycle Club, there is something about their music that I find very uplifting and charming.

When you travel what are the essential items you take with you?
A notebook and pencil to write ideas; designs and thoughts down at all times, lipstick, SPF, sunglasses and my phone.

Where is your favorite vacation spot?
Everywhere warm and extra sunny.

What is the best business advice you can give someone?
You can do it.

What does the future hold for your business? Any plans?

I am plan central ; ) There is so much I want to do. My Make Up career only just started and I am hoping to get far and work with many of my favourite photographers and designers.

There are some exciting plans in my head lately which involve all my passions and current jobs combined, but I won't tell you more for now ;)

Thanks Liv... hope one day we can get together in London and share some stories!

PM Masters: Mary Jo Matsumoto

I met this amazing designer first as a blogger and later as a fashion and accessories designer... since then we started a great friendship that has even beautifies my nails on more than one occasion. Is by any chance you have never read Trust Your Style please do so and get to know her as the talented designer Mary Jo is.

How did you get started in your career?
I started making flowered evening bags with semi precious stone handles back in 1999. I didn’t know enough to realize how much work it was going to be, but it was also such a great ride.

What are your sources of inspiration?
As much as I didn’t want to embrace it for the longest time, California and the open lifestyle—and I mean that in a emotional and mental way as well as physical—is probably the driving force in what I design. I love the ocean and of course art.

Where do you work and how do you get organized around it?
I’m  out and about a lot because I work with lots of independent contractors and I’m in their work spaces more often than not. My own work studio consists of 3 desks—one for paperwork, one for sample-making small things and another one that was supposed to be for the same but is covered in handbag samples.

Which is your favorite collection/project/product that you have designed?
My new SS12 bag line is my current love child.

Which collection/project/product out there you wish you would have designed?
Hmm, interesting question. I’m not much for copying or imitation but Raf Simons last collection for Jil Sanders was really inspiring.

What are you listening to these days?
I make endless playlists on Spotify, I like everything from Adele to Kanye so it’s hard to narrow it down.

What other profession you would like to have besides yours?
An architect.  I love the big picture ideas that it requires.

When you travel what are the essential items you take with you?
I wish I could say I was a Diptyque candles and cashmere throw kind of traveler, but I’m a last minute packer—all those years of flying around doing accessories shows taught me to have a cosmetic case filled with the essentials and I used to have a check list when I was traveling a lot, but lately I’m just winging it.

Where is your favorite vacation spot?
The Hotel Hana Maui

What is the best business advice you can give someone?
There’s nothing better than getting paid.

What does the future hold for your business? Any plans?
We will hopefully be expanding our handbag sales into lots of new stores and territories in the coming year.

Dear Mary Jo... Thank you for your time and your amazing friendship!
