The Wine Fruit

I remeber that when I was a child eating grapes was very expensive and considered a luxuxry, because they were all brought from abroad in small quatities by only one distributor. Today, They are still brought from abroad but they bring them in call colors, shapes and come from many places.

Grapes date back about 8000 years ago when it is believed wine was first made. Since than, it has been part of history as the fruit of choice in banquets and the precious fruit that makes wine. For that reason, you can see it being present in paintings and sculptures from the Greeks until today.

There are two kinds of grapes we know: table and wine. Table grapes are the ones we eat and have much less sugar, are larger and have little or no seeds. Wine grapes are smaller in size, have seeds, are sorrounded by a thick skin and have a larger concetration of sugar {perfect for wine making}.

It is believed the skin of the grape has great helth benefits {which are transfered to wine!} that include reduce vascular damage and prevent high blood preasure levels. Additionally, the contain vitamins and antioxidants that help prevent muscle aging, heart disease and inhibit cancer.

Grapes are good for sweet and savory dishes. They can be used in jams, jellys, preserves or whole to make pies and cakes. You can pair them with a variety of cheeses, from mild ones like mozzarella {to accentuate its flavor} or stronger ones like blue cheese to sweeten its taste and complement its color... Of course, they go great with wine!

Have a great day!

  11. Grapes are one of my favourite fruits, I could eat them all the time... It was sweet how you mentioned your childhood memories and the price of grapes. In Russia in the 1990s they were quite affordable, especially compared to other fruits (I guess they were brought from the south of Russia, so didn't travel far), so we used to buy them by a bucket (almost literally) and they were so delicious! x
